The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSEG) provides an accelerated 4+1 BS/MMSE program designed for top-performing University of Delaware undergraduates. This initiative enables students to obtain both a Bachelor's degree from participating departments (such as Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering, as well as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences) and a Master's in Materials Science and Engineering (MMSE) within five years of full-time study.
Environmental engineering professionals work to safeguard and rehabilitate our land, water, and air quality. Our comprehensive core program equips students with the essential knowledge to implement scientific methods in both natural and engineered environments, addressing challenges like ensuring clean drinking water, managing waste materials, remediating polluted soil and groundwater, and preventing environmental degradation. The curriculum covers contaminant origins and behaviors while teaching practical problem-solving approaches to environmental issues. Students can tailor their education through technical electives that align with career aspirations, graduate studies, or specialized minors in sustainability, energy, policy, or related disciplines.
Our research-active faculty, engaged in professional organizations, keep the curriculum cutting-edge and academically rigorous. The program incorporates hands-on learning through contemporary issue discussions, projects focused on current environmental concerns, and undergraduate research participation. Approximately 30% of environmental engineering undergrads work as paid research assistants, with most juniors and seniors involved in research, though opportunities exist for earlier academic engagement.
