Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary program rooted in social sciences and humanities. The Bachelor of Arts degree equips students to critically analyze the social, political, intellectual, and artistic aspects of African American and African Diasporic experiences by examining various media including articles, books, films, artworks, and archival documents. Students learn to articulate this knowledge through oral and written communication while applying their skills to community service initiatives benefiting Black populations locally. These competencies can enhance any professional field students pursue.
The Africana Studies - Social Studies Education Concentration (BA) is a nationally recognized program qualifying graduates to teach social studies at middle and high school levels. This concentration meets the professional standards set by the National Council for the Social Studies and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. Graduates of this program will achieve these learning outcomes: Disciplinary Expertise: Apply corrective educational methodologies addressing systemic challenges while advancing Black communities. Social Studies Proficiency: Master core concepts, analytical tools, and methodologies across history, civics, economics, geography, and behavioral sciences. Curriculum Development: Create instructional sequences aligned with national and state social studies standards. Evaluation Methods: Develop authentic assessments measuring student mastery of social studies content and skills. Teaching Strategies: Design engaging learning experiences that foster inquiry-based exploration of social studies disciplines.
