Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary program rooted in social sciences and humanities. The Bachelor of Arts degree equips students to critically examine the social, political, intellectual, and artistic aspects of African American and African Diasporic experiences by comparing various sources like articles, books, films, artworks, and archival documents. Students learn to articulate this knowledge through writing and speech while applying their skills to community service initiatives for Black populations locally. These competencies can enhance any professional direction students pursue.

The Africana Art, Literature and Cultural Studies Concentration (BA) focuses on film, media, visual arts, and material culture related to people of African descent. Graduates of this program will: 1. Apply artistic, literary, and cultural frameworks to examine Black cultural expressions within their social and political contexts. This includes studying African, African American, and diasporic traditions across different historical periods and regions. 2. Analyze creative works and cultural artifacts using Africana Studies methodologies, demonstrating research skills with diverse source materials. 3. Utilize core Africana Studies principles to evaluate key issues concerning Black communities and representation. 4. Implement research techniques specific to Africana Studies for cultural interpretation. 5. Combine scholarly insights from multiple disciplines to advance understanding of the field. 6. Develop professional communication abilities for public presentations.
