In our modern interconnected society, individuals are increasingly united in a realm of opportunities and obstacles. Across all aspects of both personal and shared experiences, we actively mold this world while being profoundly affected by events occurring in its most distant regions. NC State University's International Studies (IS) program is an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to equip graduates for a world where global connections coexist with divisions. Students select from specialized focus areas such as Africa, Europe, Latin America, East and Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Middle East, International Economy and Environment, International Relations, or International Cultural Studies. For each specialization, learners can pick from diverse courses across multiple academic disciplines. Every IS student completes three foundational courses, achieves foreign language proficiency, and participates in study abroad experiences. This approach enables International Studies majors to develop skills for engaging with cultural differences, understanding global economic forces, and interpreting evolving geopolitical landscapes in our interconnected planet.
To earn a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, students must complete a minimum of 33 credit hours. This includes three IS core courses, an advanced foreign language class, five concentration-specific courses, and six credits of guided electives. Additionally, participants must complete at least six credits through an approved Study Abroad Program. Those pursuing dual degrees may apply three internationally-focused courses from their second major toward their IS requirements. Similarly, one course from a minor can count toward the International Studies major.
