The Master of Arts in Music acknowledges a student's achievements in music, particularly focusing on historical musicology or theory. The Master of Music recognizes musical proficiency with a concentration in performance or conducting. These master's programs typically involve 24 to 30 course credits (varies by specialization). The Master of Arts additionally mandates 9 research credits (Grad 5950) along with a non-credit thesis. Performance students are required to give a public recital.
Prospective students must complete the Graduate Theory Placement Exam during the application process. (Refer to the Admission page for details.) Based on exam results, some candidates may need to enroll in Music 4371 (Theory Review) during their first semester before taking the required Music 5302 (Analytic Techniques). The test can be scheduled anytime by contacting the UConn Music Department at (860) 486-3728.
