The Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design is a terminal degree program that prepares students for careers in professional theater and entertainment. This curriculum focuses on cultivating expertise in lighting aesthetics, technical skills, design methodologies, theater history, and essential business knowledge for the industry. The program emphasizes collaborative design processes and practical experience across various performance formats including theater, musicals, opera, dance, and experimental productions.
At the heart of the program lies the Master Class, a weekly seminar for all lighting design students. Additional specialized courses cover areas like dance lighting, opera lighting, unconventional performance spaces, and technical challenges with complex staging. Students also study Lighting Design History to understand their role in the field's evolution, and Business Practices for Lighting Designers to prepare for professional realities. The program provides extensive production opportunities at the CRT theater and internships at regional venues. Typically, students design lighting for up to four Studio Works and Main Stage productions during their three-year residency, with one third-year Main Stage project serving as their MFA thesis. The department also supports student involvement in professional organizations like USITT and the Young Designers Forum, along with the Gilbert Hemsley Internship program, to facilitate industry connections.
