The Doctor of Philosophy program in Animal Science provides multiple specialization options such as: Animal Genetics and Genomics, Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Food Microbiology and Safety, Meat Science, and Animal Physiology. PhD candidates must demonstrate independent research abilities along with academic excellence. Graduate students with assistantships are expected to contribute to teaching one course annually as part of their professional growth.
The PhD curriculum mandates thirty (30) credit hours of coursework beyond a bachelor's degree, or fifteen (15) credits for those holding a master's in a related discipline. All doctoral candidates must take one credit of ANSC 5693 (Graduate Presentation Skills) and two credits of ANSC 5694 (Seminar), unless they've already fulfilled the ANSC 5693 requirement. Students must also meet Graduate School requirements for foreign language or related studies. Additionally, fifteen (15) credits of GRAD 6950 (Doctoral Dissertation Research) or GRAD 6960 (Full-Time Doctoral Dissertation Research) are required.
The following courses represent common selections for each concentration area, serving as a reference for academic planning. Final course selections will be determined in consultation with your primary advisor and doctoral committee, then documented in your Plan of Study. Previous education may exempt you from certain requirements.
