Effective preparation before entering the classroom plays a vital role in new educators' early career achievements. The caliber and thoroughness of the training program significantly influences both teaching performance and career longevity. The five-year IB/M program offers a demanding, carefully structured curriculum that delivers an ideal blend of learning opportunities, enabling participants to develop expertise in their subject matter, pedagogical understanding, and hands-on skills necessary to become accomplished educators for diverse learners.
This five-year IB/M pathway starts with students fulfilling general education and discipline-specific coursework for two years before gaining admission to the Neag School of Education. After entering the IB/M program, students typically devote two years to intensive study in their teaching specialization alongside professional education courses, culminating in a Bachelor's degree in education. The subsequent graduate year focuses on advanced professional training, leading to a Master's degree in either Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Psychology. Fulfilling all program requirements qualifies graduates for Connecticut state teaching certification.
