UConn's Marine Sciences Bachelor's programs aim to stimulate your intellect and push you academically. The curriculum centers on blending marine biology, chemistry, geology, and physics courses. Students focus on specific marine science areas through advanced electives and faculty-guided independent research. This scientific foundation is strengthened with coursework in ocean policy, law, economics, and resource management. The program emphasizes quantitative skills, practical applications, and hands-on learning. From the first semester onward, most major courses involve fieldwork in diverse regional marine ecosystems. Through immersive experiences, you'll gain direct, tangible knowledge. While similar to an environmental sciences degree in rigor, this program specifically targets Earth's dominant environment - our oceans.
Students can choose between a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Marine Sciences. Both degrees have led graduates to diverse careers. While flexible, the BS typically suits those pursuing scientific careers or graduate studies, whereas the BA often appeals to students interested in marine policy or management applications. The BS demands more quantitative coursework, while the BA incorporates additional ocean-focused social science classes.
