The marine focus links understanding of oceanic processes to wider systems including climate, land and freshwater ecosystems, and human societies and their interactions. Marine Science is an intensely multidisciplinary area that aims to comprehend the forces shaping our seas and shorelines. We combine methods and perspectives from physical, chemical, biological, and earth sciences to deepen our knowledge of marine environments and their connections with both local and global phenomena, as well as their role in sustaining communities.
Learners can choose among courses in oceanography, environmental chemistry, ecology, and toxicology to develop insights into diverse human influences on marine ecosystems. The program features a culminating course where students synthesize environmental and marine science principles to tackle oceanic environmental challenges. It also offers internship opportunities, senior research projects, or international study options to provide practical experience in students' areas of interest.
The Marine Science Focus shares foundational coursework, credit requirements, and core curriculum structure with the Environmental Science degree. This specialization incorporates classes specifically examining oceanography and marine ecosystems, covering subjects like marine biodiversity, ocean conservation, global warming impacts, and regional Salish Sea oceanography.
