The Aquaculture specialization offers education comparable to a Biology bachelor's degree, with an emphasis on finfish (including food fish, research models like zebrafish, and ornamental species) and shellfish farming, system engineering, and dietary needs. Those pursuing aquaculture studies gain expertise in applying biological, physical, and business concepts to address challenges in cultivating, processing, distributing, and overseeing aquatic organisms. They gain hands-on experience at the university's Aquaculture Research Center (ARC), which fosters emerging commercial initiatives, such as a groundbreaking project focused on breeding tropical reef fish to reduce wild harvesting. While tropical species won't naturally thrive in Maine's current climate, this program helps protect vulnerable ecosystems. Qualified students from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont may qualify for discounted tuition via the New England Regional Student Program when specializing in Aquaculture at UMaine.
