The Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies major enables students to explore the civilizations of ancient Greece, Rome, and the Biblical world. Learners can opt for either a language-focused Classics track (Greek or Latin) or an Ancient Mediterranean Studies concentration. Classics concentrators may supplement their language and literature coursework with Ancient Mediterranean Studies classes, while those focusing on Ancient Mediterranean Studies can incorporate language study (Greek, Latin, or Biblical Hebrew). Both paths culminate in the same major degree.
Engaging with the writings of Homer, Plato, Vergil, Tacitus, or Biblical texts—whether in translation or preferably in their original languages—offers a thrilling intellectual journey. Mastering an ancient language is akin to stepping into another era, providing a vantage point to identify timeless human truths that cross cultural boundaries. Simultaneously, as inheritors of this classical heritage, studying these ancient civilizations gives us valuable insight into the foundations of Western thought, literature, and social structures.
