Classics appeal to all, and students pursuing this major join a welcoming Department that combines the advantages of a small liberal arts college within a major state university. Faculty members build relationships with their majors, and the Director of Undergraduate Studies collaborates individually with each student to identify courses aligned with their academic passions and professional aspirations.
While some Classics graduates enter teaching or academia, this field is not solely career-focused. The Department provides a well-rounded liberal arts education, cultivating an environment that honors traditional scholarly methods while embracing fresh perspectives. Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, the Department promotes a holistic understanding of antiquity through history, literature, and material culture. Students explore Classics both within traditional humanities frameworks and through modern critiques of cultural traditions. Every course prioritizes analytical reasoning, precise evaluation, and strong communication skills.
Some Classics majors pursue advanced studies as philologists or archaeologists, with the Department boasting a strong track record of placing graduates in prestigious programs. Others enter secondary education or museum careers—FSU takes pride in educating most of Florida's Latin teachers (with national demand currently outstripping qualified candidates). Importantly, most Classics majors discover their broad liberal arts foundation serves them well in professional fields. Our alumni excel in law, business, and medical school admissions, with graduates succeeding in journalism, advertising, publishing, theater, law, and judiciary roles. Notably, one Classics major earned FSU's sole Rhodes Scholarship.
