The Clinical Health Psychology (CHP) program aims to educate Scientist-Practitioners with comprehensive training in clinical psychology, supplemented by specialized expertise in health psychology and behavioral medicine. Our approach emphasizes evidence-based practice that incorporates current scientific research. Students are encouraged to balance research and clinical activities, applying empirical findings to guide their therapeutic approaches. Graduates develop the skills to navigate a multifaceted society, upholding ethical standards while appreciating individual, group, and cultural diversity.
The University of Colorado Denver's Psychology Department provides a PhD program with a Clinical Health Psychology (CHP) specialization. Our program has held American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation since 2016 (APA, Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation, 750 1st St. NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242, 202.336.5979), with our next review scheduled for Winter/Spring 2024. Following the scientist-practitioner framework, we emphasize how research enhances the understanding, treatment, and prevention of health-related issues, ensuring clinical practices are scientifically validated.
CHP students gain proficiency in diverse assessment, diagnostic, and treatment methods for psychological disorders. With our health-focused curriculum, trainees also examine psychological influences on medical conditions and develop interventions addressing biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Research competence is cultivated through a master's thesis and doctoral dissertation, while clinical skills are honed via practicum placements, competency evaluations, and internships. This rigorous preparation enables graduates to pursue varied postdoctoral fellowships and career paths, with access to extensive research, clinical training, and professional development opportunities.
