Doctoral programs are tailored to each student through collaboration with a faculty advisor and doctoral committee. While adhering to The Graduate School's requirements, each program is designed to align with the student's academic background and professional goals. Key milestones in the doctoral journey include: a qualifying exam following approximately one year of coursework, formation of the doctoral committee, a program planning session with the committee, comprehensive exams after completing coursework, a dissertation proposal meeting, and the final dissertation defense. Applicants holding a master's degree in Educational Psychology or a closely related field with a thesis component may start the doctoral program immediately. Those without this background may need to complete foundational master's-level coursework and/or a thesis. All students lacking a thesis in Educational Psychology or a related discipline must fulfill a pre-dissertation research requirement.
Typically applicants have at least a 3.0 junior/senior grade-point average (on a 4.0 point scale) and broad undergraduate background including college level mathematics. Exceptions may be made for students with special backgrounds, abilities, and interests. Applicants with a master's degree will be required to show strong performance in their graduate program.
