The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) offers an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on studying the dynamic, physical, and chemical interactions within Earth's atmosphere and oceans. Central to its mission is developing scientific frameworks for climate analysis and global change prediction through observation and modeling. ATOC graduate students can earn advanced degrees in this field, while students from other departments may pursue a Graduate Certificate in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences alongside their primary degree at CU Boulder. Non-degree seekers with bachelor's qualifications can also participate through Continuing Education's ACCESS Program. Both thesis and non-thesis tracks require 30 credit hours, including at least 15 upper-level ATOC credits (5000+). Thesis candidates defend their research orally, while non-thesis students complete a comprehensive written exam based on program coursework. Detailed requirements are outlined in the ATOC Graduate Handbook.
Applicants must:
Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average.
All international applicants are required to meet a minimum standard of English proficiency.
