The Physics Department invites students pursuing a master's degree to explore diverse research opportunities across its specialized fields. Graduate students cultivate essential laboratory and computational expertise applicable to various disciplines, such as electronics engineering, computer modeling, cryogenic systems, X-ray analysis, advanced materials development, and biophysics research. Each M.S. candidate receives personalized guidance from a faculty advisor to create a tailored academic program aligned with their research interests. Physics scholars and professors utilize multiple UC Santa Cruz research centers mentioned throughout this catalog, including SCIPP and UC Observatories facilities. The department fosters interdisciplinary collaboration with astronomy, astrophysics, biology, chemistry, geosciences, electrical engineering, and mathematics. Nearby facilities like SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory offer additional research prospects. UC Santa Cruz maintains active research partnerships with global institutions including CERN, national laboratories (Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, NASA Ames, NREL), and leading tech companies (Lucent, Xerox, IBM, Bell Labs).
A bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited university awarded (conferred) prior to the quarter in which admission is sought.​Applicants with a three-year undergraduate degree must also hold a post graduate diploma, Master’s Degree, or a higher degree.
Vocational, secretarial, associate, or technical degrees are not acceptable as a first degree.
Degrees that are completed through extension universities are not acceptable as first degrees.
Degrees that follow the Bologna Accord must state as such in the official transcript.
A cumulative or overall GPA of 3.0 (on a 4 point scale) in the last two years of undergraduate education. This should be displayed on your official academic records.

For those choosing to take the TOEFL, a minimum score on the 83 on the internet-based test is required for admission.
