Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics (often called AMO Physics) examines how light and matter interact. Researchers investigate these phenomena across different scales, from individual atoms to complex molecules, addressing fundamental scientific challenges. AMO scientists work to manipulate and comprehend atoms, molecules, and light in innovative ways that seemed nearly impossible just ten years prior. Groundbreaking experiments conducted by the Physics Department and its partner institution JILA led to joint Nobel Prizes in Physics - one in 2001 for developing ultracold quantum gases and another in 2005 for advancements in ultra-precise laser and optical techniques.
