The Journalism Studies PhD program, provided by the Department of Journalism, represents one of three unique pathways within the Media Research and Practice doctoral degree offered by the College of Media, Communication and Information.
This doctoral program emphasizes investigating the connections between journalism, professional practice, and societal influences. Coursework provides students with fundamental knowledge of mass communication theories and research methodologies. This interdisciplinary approach analyzes both conventional journalism and evolving industry frontiers, encompassing areas like participatory media, grassroots reporting, audience influence on news creation, technological innovations in journalism, social media's news role, and emerging hybrid news platforms.
