The Western Civilization Certificate provides undergraduate students with an interdisciplinary program exploring the core principles of Western thought and society. This program highlights coursework in languages, cultures, sciences, arts, philosophy, law, and governance across ancient, medieval, and modern periods. With over 30 courses available, the curriculum draws from departments such as classics, English, history, philosophy, religious studies, and Germanic languages and literatures.
Administered by the Center for Western Civilization, this certificate fosters critical engagement with the unique traditions, languages, and themes defining Western cultures. The study encompasses diverse subjects and historical eras, spanning disciplines shaped by Western history, culture, and languages—including Greek and Latin studies, sciences, history, literature, arts, law, and governance in their various historical contexts. The Center supports faculty and student research on Western civilization's evolution while strengthening the university's existing leadership in these fields and expanding opportunities for further scholarly exploration.
