Geology is a multidisciplinary field focused on examining Earth's key systems and their interrelationships. The Geology Department boasts renowned research teams specializing in paleontology (including evolutionary paleoecology, with our program nationally ranked 6th), Quaternary geology and geomorphology (covering glacial processes, river dynamics, desert landscapes, and tectonic formations), sedimentology and stratigraphy (featuring sequence analysis, shale geology, and Earth's geochemical history), tectonics (mountain formation and volcanic activity), environmental geology (groundwater research plus landslide and earthquake risk reduction), and biogeochemistry with climate studies (carbon cycles, isotopic analysis, and climate change effects).
Our Geology Department aims to cultivate versatile graduate students who engage in cutting-edge research while acquiring hands-on field, lab, and instructional skills. Through Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, tuition awards, endowed fellowships, and external funding, both the department and University of Cincinnati offer year-round financial assistance to help most graduate students reach their academic and professional objectives.
