The Master of Science programs aim to provide students with a strong foundation in geology, practical skills for industry or teaching careers, research exposure, and often teaching experience.
The traditional master's program involves writing a thesis and caters to those pursuing research, industry roles, or further PhD studies. Many petroleum companies specifically seek thesis graduates due to the hands-on research experience gained. Typically completed in two years, students with limited geology background may require more time.
The Geology Department provides Master of Science and PhD programs in Geology, along with a Master of Science in Earth Science Education. Students enjoy diverse course and research opportunities across geological, geochemical, and geophysical disciplines. The Standard M.S. in Geology track requires a thesis and serves students targeting research, industry positions, or doctoral studies. Energy sector employers particularly value thesis experience. While designed as a two-year program, those with minimal geology preparation might need extended study time.
