The German Studies graduate program is renowned both nationally and globally. Our faculty consists of engaged scholars who are also creative and committed educators. Each year, a Max Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor further enhances the department's outstanding quality.

Our department's curriculum covers the full range of German literature, with particular focus on 20th and 21st-century literary works and cinema. With a strong student-centered approach, we offer comprehensive training in both theoretical knowledge and hands-on teaching experience for German language, literature, and cultural studies.

You will have the option to upload a video essay this is not a requirement of the program
In addition to the electronic application the following additional materials may need to be mailed to the UC Graduate School
Transcripts of all collegelevel work taken for credit at any college or university
Three Letters of Recommendation
GRE scores US applicants only must be sent by ETS to UCs institution code 1833
TOEFL Test Students whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum score of 560 on the TOEFL test The test must be taken in the students own country before admission is granted
