Printmaking courses at the beginner level cover relief, intaglio, screen printing, and lithography techniques. Foundational drawing and design concepts are heavily integrated into introductory classes to enhance creative problem-solving. As students progress, the focus shifts toward cultivating individual artistic ideas. Advanced coursework encourages experimentation, in-depth exploration, and conceptual growth, with the goal of students achieving mastery of their selected medium and its connection to their personal artistic vision. Printmaking students are also guided to approach their practice professionally, including proper studio, tool, and equipment usage.
The printmaking facilities feature interconnected studios spanning over 4,500 square feet dedicated to lithography, intaglio, screen printing, and relief techniques. The space is fully equipped with rollers, colored inks, flat file storage for paper, and personal lockers. Professional-grade Charles Brand and Takach-Garfield presses create a high-standard working environment. The lithography area boasts over 130 stones, a hydraulic lift, stone-graining sink, three presses, and chemical processing supplies. The intaglio studio contains copper and zinc etching tools, a Charles Brand hot plate, dedicated acid and solvent rooms with ventilation, and a specialized color printing section. Screen-printing resources include storage racks and five worktables, three of which feature vacuum-printing capabilities. Digital and photographic process support is available within the print studio, with further digital resources housed in the college's Computer Graphics Center. Graduate students have access to three private studios connected to press areas and shared workspaces. All facilities feature proper ventilation and comply with OSHA health and safety regulations for industrial environments.
