The Joint Ph.D. Program in Social Thought and Classics is designed for students who need an interdisciplinary approach combined with advanced philological expertise to study specific topics or texts from ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Applicants must first gain admission to EITHER the Committee on Social Thought OR the Classics Department and must complete at least the two-quarter language survey (Greek or Latin) offered by Classics with a B average or better. After meeting these requirements, students may apply to the second department. If accepted, they will achieve joint degree status while remaining officially registered in their original department for administrative and financial purposes (including dissertation funding). Each student will have two advisors—one from Social Thought and one from Classics. Classics-admitted students must finish all A.M. requirements in Classical Languages and Literatures during their first year. Social Thought-admitted students may complete these requirements in their second year, receiving the A.M. degree at that time. While students meet the criteria for both Social Thought and Classical Languages and Literatures master's degrees, they will be awarded only one Master's degree from the University.
