The Classics program at Stanford provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary study of the ancient Mediterranean region. Doctoral candidates focus on areas like literature, history, archaeology, or philosophy and science history, blending fundamental methodologies with cutting-edge theoretical perspectives. Stanford mandates that Ph.D. candidates fulfill 135 course units, allowing up to 45 transfer units from other institutions. Specific course requirements vary by specialization within the doctoral program, with full details available in the Stanford Bulletin. Following coursework completion (usually by year three), students dedicate their remaining two years to developing, composing, and presenting their dissertation.
