This program focuses on diverse expertise across its seven doctoral specializations: ancient history, Byzantine Greek studies, classical archaeology, classical philology, classical philosophy, medieval Latin, and modern Greek studies. Working with distinguished faculty, you'll explore innovative interdisciplinary approaches to the Greek and Roman civilizations. Beyond accessing Harvard's exceptional libraries and resources, you'll have opportunities to engage with Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies, Dumbarton Oaks, and Villa I Tatti through their programs and fellowships.Sample dissertation topics from our students include "Constructed Pasts: Hellenistic Libraries and Greek Identity," "From Federation to Empire: Mainland Greek Koina in the Imperial Era (1st-3rd Century CE)," and "Postliminium: Slavery and Homecoming in Ancient Fiction."The department prioritizes both scholarly knowledge and practical abilities in teaching, critical analysis, and research methodology, equipping graduates for academic careers and other professional paths. Our alumni hold faculty positions at institutions including Dartmouth College, Villanova University, Colby College, and UMass Boston, while others have launched careers at organizations like the Factum Foundation, Paideia Institute, Gemic, and Deloitte.
Applicants must have sufficient competence in both Greek and Latin to allow them to take upper-level courses on entering graduate school.
Writing Sample
A writing sample is required as part of the application and should be a term paper, senior thesis, or master’s essay no longer than 15 pages, not including citations and references.
