The Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations is an interdisciplinary unit featuring scholars specializing in South Asia's diverse languages, literary traditions, historical developments, philosophical systems, and religious practices. Our doctoral program centers on the critical study of South Asian textual sources in their broadest sense, forming the core of both our curriculum and dissertation requirements. This scholarly approach demands familiarity with numerous South Asian writings across different periods, coupled with analytical consideration of how we comprehend and interpret these materials. Students achieve these objectives through specialized departmental seminars and upper-level language instruction, culminating in their dissertation research. We invite prospective candidates to submit their applications for the Fall 2020 semester.
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
