The Committee on Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition (CMMN) serves as an innovative and collaborative research division at the University of Chicago, providing multidisciplinary PhD education focused on molecular mechanisms underlying biological functions related to metabolic balance, hormonal regulation, and human disorders. Centered around its graduate program, the Committee primarily dedicates itself to student education and professional development. Its 40 faculty members—comprising both fundamental researchers and clinical investigators—hold primary positions across various university departments, allowing student thesis projects to incorporate basic, clinical, and translational research approaches. CMMN's research expertise spans multiple areas including insulin function and signaling, dietary impacts and gut microbiome, obesity research in humans and animal models, diabetes genetics, sleep-circadian-metabolic interactions, cardiovascular disorders, endocrine-disrupting environmental factors, and cancer metabolism. The Committee maintains strong collaborations with federally funded initiatives such as the Diabetes Research and Training Center, Digestive Disease Research Core Center, Training Program in Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, and the NIH-supported Clinical Research Center. Additionally, CMMN has close ties with the Sleep Metabolism and Health Center, Kovler Diabetes Center, and the Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Gastroenterology divisions within the Department of Medicine.
