Similar to the intricate nature of their subject matter, our race historians examine topics through diverse, layered, and cross-disciplinary perspectives. Though our primary expertise lies in the Americas, our research extends across the Pacific and Atlantic, exploring racial hierarchies in Asia, migration challenges in Europe, and the intersection of gender and governance in Africa. While terms like imperialism and globalism may be trendy elsewhere, our faculty deeply engages with comparative historical analysis, rethinking traditional power dynamics in colonial studies, and emphasizing race's role in global human rights narratives. By integrating insights from various academic fields, our race historians examine the interconnected dimensions of race—including gender, class, sexuality, nationality, religion, and geography. They specialize in legal, political, social, cultural, and visual histories while maintaining active collaborations with campus institutions like the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture and the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality.
