The University of Chicago's East Asian history PhD program focuses on modern China, Korea, and both early modern and contemporary Japan. Our department boasts renowned scholars in these specializations, with graduates securing positions at leading universities worldwide. The program encourages transnational approaches to East Asian studies - Japanese history students frequently include Chinese or Korean specialists on their committees, while our courses and workshops often adopt regional perspectives. Many professors hold dual appointments with the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Regenstein Library's exceptional East Asian Collection contains about 850,000 volumes across multiple languages including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) plays a vital role in graduate education by facilitating interdisciplinary connections among scholars, organizing academic events, and providing resources for research opportunities both on campus and beyond.
