STEaM faculty specialize in teaching and investigating diverse critical topics focused on our cognitive and tangible engagements with the physical world. These explorations examine connections between nature and civilization, intellect and craftsmanship, creativity and material limitations, as well as the interplay of natural resources, cultural artifacts, and power dynamics. Our scholarly work spans the history of alchemy, biological sciences, technological developments, human anatomy, interspecies relationships, land management, mathematical theories, museum studies, mental health, medical practices, public welfare, and crisis management. Our geographic scope includes Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States, covering historical periods from early modernity to contemporary times. Faculty members collaborate with interdisciplinary programs in East Asian Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and Science and Technology Studies, while partnering with Brown's environmental research center, public humanities initiatives, special collections library, and international affairs institute.
