The Genetics, Genomics & Systems Biology (GGSB) Committee serves as an interdisciplinary PhD program uniting more than 60 biologists across various academic departments. This program prepares doctoral candidates for careers as independent researchers in fundamental and applied biomedical science, as well as academic instruction. GGSB provides a curriculum culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Genetics, blending contemporary genetic analysis techniques with approaches for investigating biological inquiries within intricate systems. These systems are examined through physiological, developmental, and evolutionary perspectives. With 60 faculty members spanning multiple University of Chicago departments, GGSB benefits from the Biological Sciences Division's integration of basic and clinical sciences, fostering a comprehensive interdisciplinary framework for education and investigation. The program creates a dynamic setting for rigorous, top-tier training while allowing customization to individual academic objectives. We strive to cultivate a stimulating, collaborative atmosphere that supports students' transition from structured learning to autonomous research.
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
