The Human Genetics graduate program serves as the Division of Biological Sciences' hub for exploring fundamental genetic and genomic principles applied to human traits. Our curriculum offers comprehensive education in experimental and computational genetics, statistical and population genetics, bioinformatics, and clinical genetics. A unifying focus of our research involves employing core genetic concepts and approaches to investigate disease mechanisms, predisposition, and the genetic basis of complex characteristics. We actively promote student engagement in cross-disciplinary collaborations across departments, divisions, and the wider university community. Our faculty connect foundational and clinical studies, preparing students for academic, industrial, and medical careers. Alumni have secured postdoctoral appointments at prestigious institutions including Cornell, Harvard, NIH, Sanger Centre, and several UC campuses, while others pursue faculty roles, medical practice, or executive positions in biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
