The Committee on Evolutionary Biology (CEB) is a cross-departmental and multi-institutional graduate training initiative at the University of Chicago, focused on comprehensive evolutionary biology research. This program brings together faculty and students to explore evolutionary processes across diverse timeframes—from immediate generational changes to the complete timeline of life—and at various levels, from molecular interactions to worldwide ecosystems. As a CEB PhD candidate, you'll have the opportunity to undertake interdisciplinary projects that transcend traditional departmental boundaries. Researchers in CEB investigate nearly all major organism groups and ecosystems worldwide. Students benefit from access to extensive field sites, lab facilities, seed funding for preliminary studies, and a wealth of specialized knowledge. The CEB network includes about 65 faculty affiliates spanning all four UChicago academic divisions (Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities) and seven external institutions (Argonne National Laboratory, Brookfield Zoo, Chicago Botanic Garden, Lincoln Park Zoo, Morton Arboretum, Marine Biological Laboratory at Wood's Hole, and the Field Museum).
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
