The DRSB PhD program in Development, Regeneration, and Stem Cell Biology focuses on equipping students with the skills to explore key questions in developmental biology through interdisciplinary methods. At the University of Chicago, a dynamic community of developmental biologists brings together fundamental and clinical researchers from across the Biological Sciences Division. With faculty pursuing diverse scientific interests, DRSB students can explore a wide array of research subjects and model organisms. Research systems range from unconventional models like salamanders and cephalopods to established ones such as fruit flies, nematodes, zebrafish, mice, and Arabidopsis. Thesis projects address critical areas including stem cell biology, tissue formation, regeneration, gene regulation, and human disease, employing techniques from genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, quantitative biology, neurobiology, and evolutionary biology. Beyond intensive coursework in developmental biology and related disciplines, the DRSB program prioritizes honing written and verbal communication skills while fostering analytical, quantitative reasoning. Alumni pursue thriving careers as independent researchers in academia and industry, as well as leadership roles in education, policy, science communication, and consulting.
