Typically, students choose their research advisor during the winter quarter of their initial year and begin research activities by spring. The department does not implement cumulative exams or a comprehensive written assessment for majors. Course prerequisites are minimal, allowing considerable adaptability in academic planning. Interdepartmental research collaboration is highly accessible. Chemistry Department students frequently enroll in courses across other disciplines and may obtain a chemistry degree for research conducted under non-departmental faculty supervision. The faculty actively supports students in designing customized academic paths.
Applicants to our graduate and professional programs are expected to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
