The Chemistry Department provides both M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. The Ph.D. is awarded based on demonstrating comprehensive understanding of contemporary chemistry principles and the capacity to conduct independent research, evidenced by a satisfactory doctoral dissertation. For the M.S., students can choose between submitting a thesis (Plan I) or completing graduate coursework along with an oral comprehensive exam (Plan II). Note that a Master's degree is not required for Ph.D. program admission.
UCI's organic chemistry research encompasses: synthesizing intricate natural compounds, pioneering innovative synthetic techniques, reagents, and catalysts, uncovering novel organic and organometallic reactions, engineering advanced polymers and materials, designing potential pharmaceutical compounds through antagonist/inhibitor development, investigating biosynthetic processes, modifying peptides/proteins to explore new structures and functions, and studying protein-protein and receptor-ligand dynamics.
