The Mathematics Department fosters a research-rich environment while delivering thorough mathematics and applied mathematics education for both undergraduate and graduate students. Students can pursue either a BA or BS in mathematics, with options including an applied mathematics BS or a mathematics BS with an economics focus. Those majoring in other disciplines may also pursue a mathematics minor, with details provided after the major descriptions. The mathematics and applied mathematics degree requirements reflect the department's educational philosophy, designed to build cumulative mathematical knowledge while addressing the evolving nature of the field and preparing students for academic careers in mathematics. Each bachelor's program aims to enhance students' understanding of contemporary mathematics and its connections to other sciences (BS) or arts (BA). Specific requirements implementing these educational goals are outlined below. Students should note that degree requirements may be adjusted with proper justification by petitioning the undergraduate studies director or departmental advisors in person. Please be aware that the Mathematics Department permits students to earn only one undergraduate degree.
