The Bachelor of Arts program in Germanic Studies offers students a comprehensive and tailored exploration of German-speaking nations' language, literature, and culture, along with diverse analytical approaches. This curriculum is structured to integrate seamlessly with other academic disciplines (such as anthropology, art history, comparative literature, economics, film studies, history, philosophy, political science, and sociology). At UChicago, the Germanic Studies Department consists of a select core faculty pioneering literary and cultural research. Their collective knowledge spans literary history, intellectual traditions, cultural theory, German philosophy, opera, theater, performance studies, film analysis, psychoanalysis, and visual culture. The department has also expanded its offerings in Scandinavian studies and Yiddish language and literature. Faculty and students benefit from collaborative teaching supported by an exceptional network of affiliated scholars specializing in German-related topics across multiple fields: philosophy, history, theater studies, musicology, art history, science history, sociology, religious studies, and political theory. Few institutions worldwide rival the University of Chicago for studying German Idealism or German-Jewish intellectual heritage.
