Positioned at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, where Islam meets Christianity and East intersects with West, Russia's cultural identity has continually evolved through its dynamic interactions with neighboring societies, particularly those in Eastern and Central Europe. Boasting immense natural wealth and international influence, Russia presents a compelling case for deeper study of its language, political landscape, and cultural traditions. The nation's celebrated artistic achievements in literature, cinema, visual arts, and music offer invaluable insights into this expansive, multifaceted country beyond media narratives. As a program participant, you'll engage with comprehensive coursework on Russian and Eastern European cultures, guided by passionate faculty who provide personalized support for academic success. Language immersion remains the most effective path to cultural understanding - our program delivers exceptional Russian language instruction across all skill levels. Graduates pursue diverse career paths in fields such as international business, public service, legal practice, healthcare, tourism, academia, and linguistic services.

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies provides undergraduate degree options including a B.A. in German Language and Literatures and a B.A. in Russian and East European Studies. For graduate-level specialization in German language and literature, consult the Comparative Literature Program offerings. Both undergraduate tracks begin with foundational language acquisition before progressing to advanced coursework primarily conducted in the target language. Each program's curriculum explores literary traditions, artistic movements, and cultural developments within worldwide perspectives. Exceptional German majors may participate in year-long exchanges at one of UC's three affiliated Berlin universities through the Education Abroad program, which also includes semester-length study opportunities.
