Henry Cowles, a botanist and University of Chicago professor, pioneered ecological science through his groundbreaking research on Lake Michigan's sand dunes. Currently, UChicago's Environmental and Urban Studies program examines the intricate relationships between cities, ecosystems, and human societies. The curriculum integrates approaches from humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, drawing faculty and courses from diverse departments including Anthropology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geographical Studies, Geophysical Sciences, Physics, Political Science, and Public Policy Studies. Core requirements feature a thesis project along with practical experience through internships or fieldwork. Past student projects include working at a New Mexico environmental law firm specializing in indigenous rights, tackling lead contamination in Chicago's Englewood area, and campaigning for water conservation in Mumbai, India. The program offers summer stipends to support students undertaking unpaid field research.
