UCSC's drama courses focus on the connections between theater and other artistic disciplines, including not just Theater Arts specialties like design, dance, and film/video but also literature, music, visual arts, and art history.
Our philosophy is that a comprehensive artistic and intellectual foundation prepares students for professional theater work and advanced academic pursuits. We carefully align our productions with coursework to create a cohesive learning experience.

The THEA 61 course sequence is mandatory for all Theater Arts majors. This three-part series explores approaches to examining both historical and modern performance through multiple academic lenses while surveying theater's extensive evolution. The curriculum includes readings that place theatrical works in context while providing critical frameworks for performance analysis, interpretation, and creation.
