The UCSB Anthropology Department is a mid-sized program known for its outstanding faculty, strong national presence, and top-tier graduate education. Students design individualized study and research plans focused on exploring human nature, culture, and biology across time. The M.A./Ph.D. program offers three concentrations: Archaeology, Sociocultural Anthropology, and Integrative Anthropological Sciences (IAS), with opportunities for further specialization within each area. Admission to the M.A./Ph.D. program assumes students will fulfill M.A. requirements before progressing to doctoral studies. Those holding an M.A. from another institution must show they meet UCSB's Anthropology M.A. standards and may need to complete additional coursework or pass comprehensive exams before Ph.D. advancement. Faculty evaluate these requirements after enrollment, typically within the first two years. Consequently, all Ph.D. seekers should apply through the M.A./Ph.D. program pathway.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field. Applicants will be admitted for the fall quarter only; the application deadline is December 1 for the following academic year.
