The Master of Arts in Anthropology program offers comprehensive education in both theoretical foundations and applied aspects of Anthropology, preparing students for professional roles in museums, government agencies, NGOs, and academic settings. Our graduate curriculum covers cultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology.
Anthropology focuses on understanding human diversity through social and biological perspectives, encompassing four key areas: cultural anthropology (examining social and cultural aspects of human life), linguistic anthropology (analyzing language use and diversity in social contexts), archaeology (studying past societies through material evidence), and biological anthropology (investigating human and primate biology). Beyond academic research, anthropologists apply their expertise to address practical challenges in education, healthcare, forensic science, environmental protection, and other fields.
UTSA's Anthropology Department provides specialized M.A. programs in archaeology, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology. The department promotes an integrated approach to graduate education, equipping students with methodological expertise and practical skills relevant to both academic and non-academic career paths. Through structured coursework, internships, and thesis projects, students gain proficiency in modern theoretical frameworks and develop valuable competencies in laboratory techniques, GIS applications, research methodology, grant proposal writing, teaching methods, and field practices in primatology, ethnography, and archaeology.
