Classics explores the rich heritage of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations in all their dimensions: from their languages (Greek and Latin) to their literary works and myths, historical events, philosophical ideas, and artistic achievements. This field connects us to our origins and helps us understand contemporary society. Modern concepts like citizenship, migration, democratic systems, social movements, aesthetics, and relationships often trace back to ancient traditions and societal structures.
As an interdisciplinary field, Classics at UCSB offers an engaging, thought-provoking, and enjoyable academic experience while equipping students with valuable career skills. Mastering ancient languages adds intellectual discipline to humanities education. Alumni pursue diverse paths as archivists, legal professionals, policy advocates, media specialists, educators, performers, and business strategists. Their expertise in linguistic analysis, problem-solving, and effective communication is sought after in public relations, cultural institutions, corporate environments, and technology sectors.
The Classics program features intimate seminars led by experienced professors, appealing to dedicated scholars. To accommodate varied academic interests, the department provides a major with three specialized tracks (detailed below). Students pursuing dual degrees often thrive here, with law and medical schools particularly recognizing the merit of combining Classics with other disciplines. Our supportive department fosters close student-faculty relationships.
