The History Department at UCSB offers a Middle East studies track that draws graduate students exploring eras from early Islam to the modern 20th century. Our professors cover diverse historical periods and regions, including ancient and colonial Egypt, Soviet Central Asia, America's Cold War involvement in the Middle East, Palestinian economic systems, 20th century consumer culture and growth, gender and sexual identity studies, and contemporary Egyptian socioeconomic issues.
We promote interdisciplinary collaboration across campus departments, connecting with programs like Medieval History, Cold War Research, Theology, International Affairs, and Gender Studies. Beyond primary Middle East scholars, we provide supplementary coursework for researchers and educators needing Middle Eastern historical context. Those focusing on Middle Eastern topics may want to join UCSB's Middle East Studies Center for additional resources.
