Welcome to the University of Washington's History Graduate Program. We specialize in educating future historians who contribute to academic knowledge while connecting with wider audiences. Our program hosts over 50 MA and PhD candidates across diverse historical disciplines, supported by faculty with extensive expertise. We champion cross-disciplinary and comparative historical methods, enabling students to collaborate with both our department and affiliated UW programs. Faculty and students actively participate in digital history initiatives that enhance research, education, and public engagement with historical scholarship.

While UW doesn't provide a dedicated History of Science degree, doctoral candidates can explore this field within our history PhD program. A distinctive feature of both our MA and PhD programs is how science history studies connect with broader historical research. PhD students benefit from our policy permitting one doctoral field outside the department, potentially including science philosophy, advanced natural science coursework (for qualified students), or science studies in other UW humanities departments.
