UCSB's graduate program in Public Policy History provides in-depth study and advanced research preparation focusing on 19th and 20th century policy and political economy developments. The History Department delivers comprehensive historical education alongside specialized research concentrations. While the Ph.D. represents the ultimate degree pursuit, students first complete Master's requirements as part of their progression. The curriculum equips candidates with doctoral-level research capabilities, teaching preparation through instructional experiences for higher education roles, and diverse professional skills for applying historical expertise across academic and non-academic environments. Those concentrating in public historical studies gain qualifications for positions in cultural institutions (museums, preservation organizations, oral history initiatives) or independent consulting. Program alumni emerge ready for public history instruction at collegiate levels, frequently establishing careers that bridge academic and applied historical work.
