The Department of History offers a Ph.D. concentration in Early Modern European studies. Core faculty members specializing in this area include Karl Appuhn, Aye Baltaciolu-Brammer, Daniel Jtte, John Shovlin, and Larry Wolff. Though their research spans diverse regions (including Italy, the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain, and Central Europe) and topics (encompassing environmental studies, medical history, political economy, state development, material culture, and identity formation), all emphasize social and cultural historical perspectives while promoting interdisciplinary and cross-national methodologies.
The History Department fosters active dialogue between Early Modern European specialists and scholars focusing on other historical periods and regions, such as Atlantic World studies, Middle Eastern and Islamic studies, and medieval/modern European history. Early Modern Europe students often engage with the Atlantic Workshop. Beyond departmental boundaries, relevant programming is available through the Ottoman and Turkish Initiative and the Medieval and Renaissance Center, with the latter also maintaining MARGIN - a vibrant interdisciplinary graduate student workshop.
